The Tama PAL146 Starphonic is the aluminium model from the line of Starphonic snare drums. In creating this series, Tama was aiming to provide full projection and rich resonance. The seamless, 14 x 6-inch shell has been made of 1.2mm-thick aluminium. In combination with the Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon Snappy Snare snare wires, that gives this snare drum an open sound with complex overtones. The special Grooved hoops are innovative hoops with a vintage look, which can be tightened by means of the 10 Freedom Lugs. These special lugs work like claws and that grab the hoops and pull down on them. This makes changing a drumhead much faster, as you don't need to completely remove the tension rods. Furthermore, they are fitted with rubber washers that help it maintain a constant tension.

The Snappy Snare snare wires are tightened by the Linear Drive snare strainer. This strainer ensures that you tighten the snares in a linear way. That may sound complicated, but it simply ensures the snares are tightened in a fluid motion, so that you will no longer hear them snapping against the head. The butt-end is placed in a 30-degree angle, to relieve the pressure on the strainer and the shell. And because it can easily be detached from the shell, you can quickly and easily replace the resonant head, without needing to touch your snare settings.
